How Serena and Venus Williams changed women’s tennis for ever
As Serena Williams stood two wins away from one of the ultimate achievements in her sport, it all seemed to be falling apart. For 10 months between 2002 and 2003, she had established a level of dominance not seen since the greats of the previous century. On a warm January night in Melbourne, though, she was on the brink of a crushing defeat, trailing Kim Clijsters 1-5 in the third set of their 2003 Australian Open semi-final.
But Williams had won three grand slam tournaments in a row for a reason. This was a time when she seemed almost unbeatable in the biggest moments. Defeat was one mistake away, but she eradicated all unforced errors from her game as Clijsters cowered. Williams saved two match points, she won six games in a row and then she held off her sister, Venus, in their fourth successive grand slam final to seal the “Serena Slam”.
It was a classic Serena Williams moment, scrapping until the death, a mentality that has defined her career and driven her success. “Until you’re shaking hands with them, they do not think they’re going to lose,” laughs Mary Carillo, the former doubles champion turned broadcaster. “They really don’t believe it. And that, I think, was a thing that the other players in the locker room really felt: ‘You can have a set and a break lead on me, but do you really think you’re going to beat me?’”
With constant demonstrations of her physical and mental fortitude, Williams changed the face of the sport alongside her sister, setting the bar in the sky and forcing the world to try to keep up.
For much of the early years of the Williams story, the younger sister was an afterthought. Venus had entered the storm first, validating the endless hype in her debut at 14 years old, nearly beating Arantxa Sánchez Vicario. A year later, Serena’s career began with a relative whimper, a 1-6, 1-6 dismantling in the first qualifying round of the Canadian Open. When Richard Williams warned that Serena would be even better, few listened.
While Venus always drew power from her height, Serena took time to fill out her frame, which would play a defining role in her growth. In lieu of Venus’s range, she learned how to drag opponents off the court with sharp angles, to smartly construct attacking points and, when all else failed, to hustle until the end. In 1999, aged 17, she truly began to harness her power, which combined with her nous for destructive consequences.
She ended a remarkable breakthrough year with an all-time great series of wins at the 1999 US Open: Clijsters, Wimbledon champion Conchita Martínez, world No 4 Monica Seles, No 2-ranked Lindsay Davenport, Martina Hingis, the No 1. Four of the five matches were decided in three brutal sets, yet at the end of the week Williams stood as a grand slam champion. “Five hall of famers,” says Pam Shriver, a hall of fame player herself. “You look at who she beat. It was unbelievable.”
Dominance did not immediately follow. It was Venus who began to rack up major titles first, winning four of six grand slam titles across 2000 and 2001. Then Serena simply rose above her sister’s top level. By 2003, she was one of the greatest movers of all time and one of the most destructive ball-strikers. Her serve was smooth, reliable and vicious. As she and Venus also rolled through doubles titles, she had developed a complete game. “It almost seemed like they were playing a different sport,” says Carillo.
The impact of the Williams sisters is best reflected in the fleeting challenges of their rivals. The late 90s had been a period of transition in the final years of Steffi Graf, with a group of dynamic, brash and charismatic young talents initially headed by Hingis, a genius on the court but whose delicate guile was increasingly inefficient in their presence. The Williams dominance, along with the forceful shot-making of Davenport and Jennifer Capriati, slammed her window of opportunity shut. By 2002, as Venus and Serena played in four consecutive grand slam finals, she was done.
“When the bar is raised that high, in that much of a hurry, it’s gonna be a hard thing to adjust to,” says Carillo. “You play your whole young life playing one way and now all of a sudden there are two players saying: ‘OK, you’re really good, I know you’ve been doing this your whole life but get a load of this.’ What are you supposed to do? Change your grips? Hit more of an open stance?”
Karolina Pliskova, 30, is one of the few current top players today old enough to have seen the Williams sisters during the early days. She and her twin sister, Kristyna, saw in them the attacking style of play they wished to execute. “Before them tennis was completely different,” Karolina says.
As some fell away during the first wave of Williams dominance, others adapted. Clijsters was already a supreme athlete while Justine Henin emerged in 2003 with added muscle. Under the right circumstances, Henin found joy in blunting Serena’s power with her variety and countering with her own weapons. But while the Williams sisters lasted for more than 25 years, the challenge of keeping up burned her out. By 2008, both Henin and Clijsters had announced their first retirements.
‘There were so many rivalries that she could’ve had,” says Shriver. “It wasn’t her fault. Nobody stepped up the way she stepped up time and time again. People say she didn’t have the Chris [Evert] and Martina [Navratilova] rivalry. You can only play who’s there. Think of all the champions she saw off, starting with Graf, Hingis, Clijsters, Henin, Capriati, Davenport.”
The Williams sisters had entered the sport at a time guile and patience were core features of most players, groundstrokes unwound with elaborate, inefficient motions incapable of dealing with such pace. They did not invent the power game – Seles, Capriati, Davenport and Mary Pierce preceded them – but their athleticism and serving took it to unimaginable places. Their influence was reflected in those who followed, such as the emergence of Maria Sharapova, who studied them in her youth and mimicked their attacking mindsets, but without the athleticism or nous to measure up.
As essential as it was in the history of women’s tennis, that first peak of Serena’s was short-lived in the context of her 27-year career. By the end of 2003, she had undergone knee surgery and then her world was rocked by the killing of her sister, Yetunde. Her following years would be marked by inactivity, depression and her plummeting ranking, a fall that set the stage for one of her numerous legendary comebacks as she won the 2007 Australian Open.
As her career lengthened and she moved further from her athletic peak, Serena’s all-time great serve became an even more central part of her game. “Technically, it was perfect,” says Carillo. “It was divine. Her toss never varied. It just never changed so you couldn’t read it well. Her serve wide to the deuce court is, I think, my favourite serve of all time.”
Shriver was one of the great servers of her own time, and she believes that Serena’s serve has been transformative for the entire game. “I think that more people realised in the women’s game that the serve needed to be a weapon,” Shriver says. “I think that’s one of her legacies. I do feel like the serve in women’s tennis in the last 10 years has been appreciated more and worked on more.”
Serena’s legacy was not only defined by her game. At the US Open, a brief look at the number of black fans and people of colour present underlines how their success has affected who watches, participates and claims it as their own. “When you walk around the grounds now versus 25 years ago, it looks totally different,” says Shriver. “The appeal to bring in people of colour. I don’t think Arthur [Ashe] had this kind of impact. Obviously Althea [Gibson] didn’t. They’ve really changed who comes to watch tennis and who plays. That’s a big legacy right there.”
And also who plays it at the highest level. Before the Williams sisters, Evonne Goolagong and Zina Garrison were the only black women to reach grand slam finals in the Open era. In the past five years alone, Madison Keys, Sloane Stephens, Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff have all achieved that distinction. Years after this grand farewell is complete, more will follow.

In lieu of Venus’s range, she learned how to drag opponents off the court with sharp angles, to smartly construct attacking points and, when all else failed, to hustle until the end. In 1999, aged 17, she truly began to harness her power, which combined with her nous for destructive consequences.
She ended a remarkable breakthrough year with an all-time great series of wins at the 1999 US Open: Clijsters, Wimbledon champion Conchita Martínez, world No 4 Monica Seles, No 2-ranked Lindsay Davenport, Martina Hingis, the No 1. Four of the five matches were decided in three brutal sets, yet at the end of the week Williams stood as a grand slam champion. “Five hall of famers,” says Pam Shriver, a hall of fame player herself. “You look at who she beat. It was unbelievable.”
Dominance did not immediately follow. It was Venus who began to rack up major titles first, winning four of six grand slam titles across 2000 and 2001. Then Serena simply rose above her sister’s top level. By 2003, she was one of the greatest movers of all time and one of the most destructive ball-strikers. Her serve was smooth, reliable and vicious. As she and Venus also rolled through doubles titles, she had developed a complete game. “It almost seemed like they were playing a different sport,” says Carillo.
The impact of the Williams sisters is best reflected in the fleeting challenges of their rivals. The late 90s had been a period of transition in the final years of Steffi Graf, with a group of dynamic, brash and charismatic young talents initially headed by Hingis, a genius on the court but whose delicate guile was increasingly inefficient in their presence. The Williams dominance, along with the forceful shot-making of Davenport and Jennifer Capriati, slammed her window of opportunity shut. By 2002, as Venus and Serena played in four consecutive grand slam finals, she was done.
“When the bar is raised that high, in that much of a hurry, it’s gonna be a hard thing to adjust to,” says Carillo. “You play your whole young life playing one way and now all of a sudden there are two players saying: ‘OK, you’re really good, I know you’ve been doing this your whole life but get a load of this.’ What are you supposed to do? Change your grips? Hit more of an open stance?”
Karolina Pliskova, 30, is one of the few current top players today old enough to have seen the Williams sisters during the early days. She and her twin sister, Kristyna, saw in them the attacking style of play they wished to execute. “Before them tennis was completely different,” Karolina says.
As some fell away during the first wave of Williams dominance, others adapted. Clijsters was already a supreme athlete while Justine Henin emerged in 2003 with added muscle. Under the right circumstances, Henin found joy in blunting Serena’s power with her variety and countering with her own weapons. But while the Williams sisters lasted for more than 25 years, the challenge of keeping up burned her out. By 2008, both Henin and Clijsters had announced their first retirements.
‘There were so many rivalries that she could’ve had,” says Shriver. “It wasn’t her fault. Nobody stepped up the way she stepped up time and time again. People say she didn’t have the Chris [Evert] and Martina [Navratilova] rivalry. You can only play who’s there. Think of all the champions she saw off, starting with Graf, Hingis, Clijsters, Henin, Capriati, Davenport.”
The Williams sisters had entered the sport at a time guile and patience were core features of most players, groundstrokes unwound with elaborate, inefficient motions incapable of dealing with such pace. They did not invent the power game – Seles, Capriati, Davenport and Mary Pierce preceded them – but their athleticism and serving took it to unimaginable places. Their influence was reflected in those who followed, such as the emergence of Maria Sharapova, who studied them in her youth and mimicked their attacking mindsets, but without the athleticism or nous to measure up.
As essential as it was in the history of women’s tennis, that first peak of Serena’s was short-lived in the context of her 27-year career. By the end of 2003, she had undergone knee surgery and then her world was rocked by the killing of her sister, Yetunde. Her following years would be marked by inactivity, depression and her plummeting ranking, a fall that set the stage for one of her numerous legendary comebacks as she won the 2007 Australian Open.
As her career lengthened and she moved further from her athletic peak, Serena’s all-time great serve became an even more central part of her game. “Technically, it was perfect,” says Carillo. “It was divine. Her toss never varied. It just never changed so you couldn’t read it well. Her serve wide to the deuce court is, I think, my favourite serve of all time.”
Shriver was one of the great servers of her own time, and she believes that Serena’s serve has been transformative for the entire game. “I think that more people realised in the women’s game that the serve needed to be a weapon,” Shriver says. “I think that’s one of her legacies. I do feel like the serve in women’s tennis in the last 10 years has been appreciated more and worked on more.”
Serena’s legacy was not only defined by her game. At the US Open, a brief look at the number of black fans and people of colour present underlines how their success has affected who watches, participates and claims it as their own. “When you walk around the grounds now versus 25 years ago, it looks totally different,” says Shriver. “The appeal to bring in people of colour. I don’t think Arthur [Ashe] had this kind of impact. Obviously Althea [Gibson] didn’t. They’ve really changed who comes to watch tennis and who plays. That’s a big legacy right there.”
And also who plays it at the highest level. Before the Williams sisters, Evonne Goolagong and Zina Garrison were the only black women to reach grand slam finals in the Open era. In the past five years alone, Madison Keys, Sloane Stephens, Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff have all achieved that distinction. Years after this grand farewell is complete, more will follow.

Jill Scott has announced her retirement from football after an incredible career, which made her the second most capped player – male or female – in English football history.
The 35-year-old midfielder ends on a high, having won Euro 2022 with England this summer, the culmination of a 16‑year international career. She made her England debut in 2006 and played 161 times for her country. Only Fara Williams has more caps with 172.
“I may be saying my goodbyes to football, but we’re going to make this a celebration,” Scott said in a farewell piece for the Players’ Tribune. “No sad faces. We’ve had too much fun for any tears.”
The news comes only a day after another Euro 2022 winner, Ellen White, said she would hang up her boots after England’s successful summer. Scott’s decision is less of a surprise as she is without a club after leaving Manchester City.
Scott said: “Maybe it’s because I’m from Sunderland, but two things have always been true about me: I’ve always been stubborn, and I’ve always loved football. It’s been in my blood ever since I was five years old. I saw a load of boys playing in the school yard and I walked straight up to them and said the four magic words … ‘Can I play too?’”
Scott is one of the most respected and influential players in England’s history. Apart from winning Euro 2022 this summer, she finished third at the 2015 World Cup and was a losing finalist at the European Championship in 2009. She played in 10 major tournaments, including two Olympic Games for Great Britain.
Scott also left her mark at club level, having come through at Sunderland before joining Everton in 2006. She spent seven years on Merseyside and a further eight at Manchester City, although she lost her starting place towards the end and was loaned out, first to Everton, then to Aston Villa. She won the Women’s Super League once, the WSL Cup three times and the FA Cup four times.
In 2019, after she was awarded an MBE for services to women’s football, she said: “I feel very honoured, but it also seems surreal. I’m just a young girl from Sunderland who fell in love with a game called football.”
A hugely popular player among teammates, Scott was described by the former England coach Phil Neville as “happy-go-lucky”. He credited her with bringing “some cheekiness to the squad” and Scott’s former teammate Carly Telford said last year: “She’ll never take the plaudits that she deserves. She’s so unselfish, she will do anything for the team.”
The England head coach, Sarina Wiegman, paid tribute to Scott, saying: “I must congratulate Jill on a very special career. I am so glad she was able to end on such a positive memory.
It will be hard to imagine an England squad without her as she has been an icon of the team for so long. I respect her decision, but we will miss her positive impact on and off of the pitch for sure.
“To be able to play at the highest level for so long tells you how good a player Jill has been, and her story is a positive example that others will continue to follow. She still has a huge amount to offer, so I hope she won’t be lost to the women’s game in the future – whatever that role may be. She is a very special person, and although it was only for a short period, I feel privileged to have had the chance to work with her.”
The Duke of Cambridge also congratulated Scott on her career, writing in a personal tweet: “A pioneer of women’s football and a great team player … congratulations on a wonderful career, it’s been a pleasure to get to know you. Finals curtain-raiser an ‘amazing opportunity’

AFLW clubs Melbourne and North Melbourne will clash at the MCG next Friday as a curtain-raiser to the men’s qualifying final between Melbourne and Sydney.
The round 2 match was due to be played at Port Melbourne but the AFL has made the switch to the MCG
The game will be played at 5pm, with the AFL final between the Demons and Swans to kick off at 7.50pm.
AFLW chief Nicole Livingstone said the high demand for tickets and to have it played in front of a bumper crowd were key reasons behind the decision.
“To be able to run out on the MCG and play amazing football in front of a huge crowd ahead of a Final is an amazing opportunity and one we’re so glad we’ve made a reality,” Livingstone said.
AFL clubs and broadcasting boss Travis Auld said the move was the perfect opportunity to promote the women’s game on the biggest stage.
“We’re focused on ensuring our AFLW teams can play large stadiums wherever logistically possible,” Auld said.
“We’ll continue to champion our women’s teams and highlight the amazing talent we have throughout the league by facilitating these kinds of opportunities.”
Saturday’s AFLW round 1 game between Essendon and Hawthorn — two teams entering the AFLW for the first time this season — was sensationally moved a fortnight ago from Port Melbourne’s ETU Stadium to Marvel Stadium to accommodate surging ticket sales.
The AFL is keen to boost the crowd at Marvel Stadium by offering two-for-one tickets.
The stadium mailing list on Monday received a link to access “bring a friend for free” tickets in a bid to see as many people at the huge clash.
Breaking down AFLW’s seven biggest issues
As the seventh season of AFL Women’s looms large, will it be a case of seventh heaven?
Or will the season face its challenges as it did earlier this year?
We take a look at the biggest issues facing the game ahead of its first-ever August edition.
TIGHT TURNAROUND
It was midway through the last season of AFLW that the league first floated the idea of August, which was later agreed to by stakeholders and clubs.
It’s meant little downtime for players and club staff with the “off-season” lasting just a handful of weeks, if that, before pre-season began yet again.
Expansion clubs – who thought they might well have had another six months or so up their sleeves to build coaching panels and playing lists – were swiftly flung into top gear to get their act together in time.
It’s been a whirlwind, but they’re now on the home stretch.
Fatigue will no doubt become a factor in the latter part of the season with AFL Women’s players and staffers essentially having been on the clock since around last October, but many are pointing out that this will – hopefully – be the last time the game faces this issue as it settles in what is hoped to be a long-term home in August every year.

COVID CHAOS?
We know, but we have to go there.
The Omicron variant ran rampant through the competition earlier this year, causing chaos everywhere it went. Fixture changes, finals moved, teams ravaged.
That’s not to say it won’t happen again.
The latest Covid variant is thought to be more transmissible and skilled at evading vaccine protection, meaning clubs intend to remain vigilant.
While many aren’t keen to place stringent limits on players and their movements – particularly many still work, study and provide care to others – it’s safe to say players will be making smart choices of their own.
As recently revealed by the Herald Sun, should the government opt to shorten the mandated quarantine period for Covid cases from seven days to five following the predicted winter wave, the league could also follow suit.
WELL GROUNDED
The Bombers’ first round meeting with Hawthorn has already been shifted to Marvel Stadium and more games could yet be on the move.
Melbourne faces North Melbourne at Port Melbourne’s ETU Stadium, with the first-ever Dreamtime game between Richmond and Essendon also scheduled for that ground, raising suggestions ticket sales could warrant more upheavals.
And why not?
Hawks senior coach Bec Goddard declared in starting the push to “Move it to Marvel” that “no one rises to low expectations”, and women’s sport around the globe is seeing record numbers of crowds flock to games.
Why not here, Essendon forward Bonnie Toogood said recently.
Hawk Lou Stephenson played a practice game on the MCG on the eve of the season, and said “there were a few tears” pre-game.
“We deserve to be there,” she said.
“We’re professional athletes now. That’s the stadiums and the credit that we deserve to be at.”
DEPTH TESTED
It was arguably the first issue highlighted when four new teams – Hawthorn, Essendon, Port Adelaide and Sydney – were announced as joining the competition in 2022, 2.0.
Is there enough talent in the market to sustain an extra 120 players joining the competition, and what would it mean for state leagues, too?
Depth is key to premiership hopes – particularly in the Covid era.
Only time will tell, but the recent AFLW draft presented a vast number of strong prospects who have come through a solid Australian rules pathway.
Industry figures remain optimistic given the numbers of participants in women’s football across the country that AFLW is going to become stronger with the development framework continuing to lay the foundations – just like the boys have had for decades.
UPPING THE ANTE
Players have already noticed a significant increase in what they’ve been able to achieve in being contracted for more hours at clubs.
Some have already opted to step back from work, according to Demons defender Libby Birch, who recently said “if you’re not totally doing that, the competition is going to surpass you”.
“You’ve got to sort of take back your work now and become more of a footballer,” she said, in the wake of the game’s latest collective bargaining agreement that significantly boosted both player pay and contracted hours.
Fitness and ball skills have been notably improved already in the wake of clubs having more access to players in the new era.
But some club officials have warned of the fine line teams will have to balance with some players still employed or studying and balancing their football commitments.
Year 12 students have allowances to train less and have to be supported by their clubs.
Concerns were raised by some AFLW players last season that access to facilities and resources needed to lift, with some players even reportedly resourcing their own rehabilitation at times.
DRAW DESIRE
Some teams still don’t face each other, which remains a bugbear for some players.
Some teams have never even met across the six seasons of the competition thus far.
Season growth will be a key element to the negotiations of the next collective bargaining agreement, which will begin in coming months, after the league maintained the season at 10 weeks plus finals.
The AFL Players’ Association is eyeing a full-time, 18-round competition by 2026 – if not sooner.
Incremental growth is the preferred option for players.
ON THE MOVE
New season, new colours.
Expansion delivered one of the busiest off-season sign and trade periods in recent years, with two league best and fairest winners picking up their boots and shifting across town.
Superstar Crow Erin Phillips is going back to her roots at Port Adelaide – where she grew up with dad Greg – as skipper alongside ex-Docker Gemma Houghton, while former Blue Madison Prespakis has a new home at the Bombers.
Safe to say the expansion sides made their presence immediately felt, making a big play for top players at most clubs.
And while they weren’t always successful, they certainly made an impression and ruffled a few feathers along the way.

Finals curtain-raiser an ‘amazing opportunity’

AFLW clubs Melbourne and North Melbourne will clash at the MCG next Friday as a curtain-raiser to the men’s qualifying final between Melbourne and Sydney.
The round 2 match was due to be played at Port Melbourne but the AFL has made the switch to the MCG
The game will be played at 5pm, with the AFL final between the Demons and Swans to kick off at 7.50pm.
AFLW chief Nicole Livingstone said the high demand for tickets and to have it played in front of a bumper crowd were key reasons behind the decision.
“To be able to run out on the MCG and play amazing football in front of a huge crowd ahead of a Final is an amazing opportunity and one we’re so glad we’ve made a reality,” Livingstone said.
AFL clubs and broadcasting boss Travis Auld said the move was the perfect opportunity to promote the women’s game on the biggest stage.
“We’re focused on ensuring our AFLW teams can play large stadiums wherever logistically possible,” Auld said.
“We’ll continue to champion our women’s teams and highlight the amazing talent we have throughout the league by facilitating these kinds of opportunities.”
Saturday’s AFLW round 1 game between Essendon and Hawthorn — two teams entering the AFLW for the first time this season — was sensationally moved a fortnight ago from Port Melbourne’s ETU Stadium to Marvel Stadium to accommodate surging ticket sales.
The AFL is keen to boost the crowd at Marvel Stadium by offering two-for-one tickets.
The stadium mailing list on Monday received a link to access “bring a friend for free” tickets in a bid to see as many people at the huge clash.
Breaking down AFLW’s seven biggest issues
As the seventh season of AFL Women’s looms large, will it be a case of seventh heaven?
Or will the season face its challenges as it did earlier this year?
We take a look at the biggest issues facing the game ahead of its first-ever August edition.
TIGHT TURNAROUND
It was midway through the last season of AFLW that the league first floated the idea of August, which was later agreed to by stakeholders and clubs.
It’s meant little downtime for players and club staff with the “off-season” lasting just a handful of weeks, if that, before pre-season began yet again.
Expansion clubs – who thought they might well have had another six months or so up their sleeves to build coaching panels and playing lists – were swiftly flung into top gear to get their act together in time.
It’s been a whirlwind, but they’re now on the home stretch.
Fatigue will no doubt become a factor in the latter part of the season with AFL Women’s players and staffers essentially having been on the clock since around last October, but many are pointing out that this will – hopefully – be the last time the game faces this issue as it settles in what is hoped to be a long-term home in August every year.

COVID CHAOS?
We know, but we have to go there.
The Omicron variant ran rampant through the competition earlier this year, causing chaos everywhere it went. Fixture changes, finals moved, teams ravaged.
That’s not to say it won’t happen again.
The latest Covid variant is thought to be more transmissible and skilled at evading vaccine protection, meaning clubs intend to remain vigilant.
While many aren’t keen to place stringent limits on players and their movements – particularly many still work, study and provide care to others – it’s safe to say players will be making smart choices of their own.
As recently revealed by the Herald Sun, should the government opt to shorten the mandated quarantine period for Covid cases from seven days to five following the predicted winter wave, the league could also follow suit.
WELL GROUNDED
The Bombers’ first round meeting with Hawthorn has already been shifted to Marvel Stadium and more games could yet be on the move.
Melbourne faces North Melbourne at Port Melbourne’s ETU Stadium, with the first-ever Dreamtime game between Richmond and Essendon also scheduled for that ground, raising suggestions ticket sales could warrant more upheavals.
And why not?
Hawks senior coach Bec Goddard declared in starting the push to “Move it to Marvel” that “no one rises to low expectations”, and women’s sport around the globe is seeing record numbers of crowds flock to games.
Why not here, Essendon forward Bonnie Toogood said recently.
Hawk Lou Stephenson played a practice game on the MCG on the eve of the season, and said “there were a few tears” pre-game.
“We deserve to be there,” she said.
“We’re professional athletes now. That’s the stadiums and the credit that we deserve to be at.”

DEPTH TESTED
It was arguably the first issue highlighted when four new teams – Hawthorn, Essendon, Port Adelaide and Sydney – were announced as joining the competition in 2022, 2.0.
Is there enough talent in the market to sustain an extra 120 players joining the competition, and what would it mean for state leagues, too?
Depth is key to premiership hopes – particularly in the Covid era.
Only time will tell, but the recent AFLW draft presented a vast number of strong prospects who have come through a solid Australian rules pathway.
Industry figures remain optimistic given the numbers of participants in women’s football across the country that AFLW is going to become stronger with the development framework continuing to lay the foundations – just like the boys have had for decades.
UPPING THE ANTE
Players have already noticed a significant increase in what they’ve been able to achieve in being contracted for more hours at clubs.
Some have already opted to step back from work, according to Demons defender Libby Birch, who recently said “if you’re not totally doing that, the competition is going to surpass you”.
“You’ve got to sort of take back your work now and become more of a footballer,” she said, in the wake of the game’s latest collective bargaining agreement that significantly boosted both player pay and contracted hours.
Fitness and ball skills have been notably improved already in the wake of clubs having more access to players in the new era.
But some club officials have warned of the fine line teams will have to balance with some players still employed or studying and balancing their football commitments.
Year 12 students have allowances to train less and have to be supported by their clubs.
Concerns were raised by some AFLW players last season that access to facilities and resources needed to lift, with some players even reportedly resourcing their own rehabilitation at times.
DRAW DESIRE
Some teams still don’t face each other, which remains a bugbear for some players.
Some teams have never even met across the six seasons of the competition thus far.
Season growth will be a key element to the negotiations of the next collective bargaining agreement, which will begin in coming months, after the league maintained the season at 10 weeks plus finals.
The AFL Players’ Association is eyeing a full-time, 18-round competition by 2026 – if not sooner.
Incremental growth is the preferred option for players.
ON THE MOVE
New season, new colours.
Expansion delivered one of the busiest off-season sign and trade periods in recent years, with two league best and fairest winners picking up their boots and shifting across town.
Superstar Crow Erin Phillips is going back to her roots at Port Adelaide – where she grew up with dad Greg – as skipper alongside ex-Docker Gemma Houghton, while former Blue Madison Prespakis has a new home at the Bombers.
Safe to say the expansion sides made their presence immediately felt, making a big play for top players at most clubs.
And while they weren’t always successful, they certainly made an impression and ruffled a few feathers along the way.
‘My dreams came true’: England star Ellen White bows out at the top

Given that Ellen White has spent so many years perfecting the art of being in the right place at the right time, it perhaps should not come as a total surprise that England women’s record goalscorer is retiring from football at the zenith of her career.
Three weeks after helping Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses win Euro 2022 by beating Germany at Wembley the 33-year-old has gone out on the high she strove so hard, for so long, to achieve. After scoring 52 goals for England in 113 senior matches White can be left harbouring few, if any, regrets about a CV which includes appearances at three World Cups and three European Championships, in addition to representing Great Britain at two Olympics.
When England reached the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup in France, White was the tournament’s joint top scorer with six goals. This summer she started all six Euro 2022 games as the Lionesses won their first major trophy, scoring twice.
Last November a forward who blended exceptional movement and positional sense with stellar link and hold-up play exceeded Kelly Smith’s previous Lionesses’ record of 46 goals during England’s record20-0 World Cup qualifying win against Latvia. Only Wayne Rooney, with 53, has scored more frequently in an England shirt.
White bows out with a year remaining on her contract with Manchester City where she will be much missed. The same goes for Wiegman and England, whose preparations for next summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand are bound to feel slightly strange without the presence of the Lionesses’ “third captain”.
Centre-forwards rarely wear the armband but England’s manager identified White’s leadership qualities as so strong that she asked her to assume the captaincy on those occasions when the captain, Leah Williamson, and her deputy, Millie Bright, were unavailable.
“Ellen’s given so much for England, we are all so proud of her,” Wiegman said on Monday. “I have only had the pleasure of working with her for this past year but her professionalism, work rate and finishing ability is world class. We will miss her but I fully understand her decision to take a new direction.
“This summer she did an amazing job for the team. She’s the perfect team player and helped the younger players find their way in international football. I already knew she was a great player but I found an even better person.”
With customary elegance White handed the baton to, among others, the young England forward Alessia Russo. “This had been one of the hardest decisions of my life but one I know is right for me,” said White.
“This decision has always been one I’ve wanted to make on my terms. And this is my time to say goodbye to football and watch the next generation shine. It has been my greatest honour and privilege to play this game. My dreams came true on 31 July, becoming a European champion.”
Ever courteous, the former Chelsea, Leeds, Arsenal, Notts County and Birmingham forward signed off with a typically classy and assured touch, saying: “Let’s use the momentum from the Euros win to make sure that every young person in all communities has the opportunity to play and feel connected to all England football teams.” Those words were invested with added heft by White’s status as an individual who has long pushed for improved standards and opportunities across the domestic game.
England fans will miss the sight of her hallmark goal celebration, namely the famous “goggles” pose she copied from her hero Anthony Modeste. Intended, originally, as a tribute to the French striker, it reflects the mutual love of Bundesliga football shared by White and her husband, Callum Convery, a football development officer at Nottinghamshire FA.
The couple met as sports science students at Loughborough University, later falling for Modeste during one of their frequent trips to Germany. They also take a keen interest in Oldham Athletic women’s team, where they are kit sponsors, and West Ham, the club White supported as a child growing up in Buckinghamshire.
“Ellen White will long be remembered as a model for others to follow,” said Lady Sue Campbell, the FA’s director of women’s football. “It is not just about her record-breaking 52 goals and performances but about the standards she set and the way she conducts herself. A true leader of women, it has never been about Ellen White for her – it was always the team first. She is a legend of the modern game.”
Few internationals can look back on participation in six major tournaments but it was not always plain sailing for a striker who lost two years of her career to serious knee injuries. Those moments of adversity perhaps explain the unbridled joy with which a wonderfully uninhibited White – someone who had previously avoided the limelight – could be seen dancing in front of the television cameras after every England game this summer.
“Ellen’s always had this great desire to be the best but she’s humble with it,” said the Brighton manager, Hope Powell, who as England coach gave White her debut in 2010. “That humility is Ellen’s key quality.”

Women’s 4x100m quartet drop baton as Germany triumph
Men’s team set European championship record in winning gold
Dina Asher-Smith had expected to bring the curtain down on an exceptional European championships for Britain by leading the 4x100m women to gold. Instead she was left with her hands on her hips as the ghosts of relays past came back to haunt the team.
Dropped batons used to be one of those perennial British problems, alongside late-running trains and bad food at motorway service stations.
And between the Atlanta Games in 1996 and the world championships in Beijing in 2015, a GB 4x100m team dropped the baton or were disqualified 11 times in an Olympics or world championships.
However in recent years Britain have turned baton-changing into an art form – and reaped the rewards. So it was a major surprise to see Imani‑Lara Lansiquot hold out her hand for the baton on the second leg – and her teammate Asha Philip fail to get it to her. It meant the team were left shaking their heads as the German team delighted the 50,000 home crowd by taking gold.
“I’m shocked by what happened out there,” Philip said. “I can’t really get my head around it. We came here to defend our title but things just didn’t go my way in that race.”
It said a lot about the bond in the team that Philip was comforted by her teammates. Asher‑Smith tried to put what had happened into perspective.
“As I was saying to these ladies, we’re so strong,” she said. “I feel like it’s one of those things where behind the scenes this year, we’ve worked so hard, we’ve improved so much and nothing is ever going to change that. If that means our time comes in Budapest and Paris then so be it.
“Some things that are very frustrating, make us sharper and make us want it even more. This is anomaly.”
Britain ended these championships with 20 medals – their joint second best behind Zurich in 2014 and only behind Germany in the medal table. Two more came on the final day through the men’s 4x100m team, who won gold, and Jake Wightman, who won silver in the men’s 800m.
“It’s a formality now,” the men’s relay team captain, Nethaneel Mitchell‑Blake, said after they won in a championship record of 37.67 seconds. “We won in 14, 16, 18 and now 22. We’re serial champions. We don’t take it for granted but there’s a standard we expect, especially in Europe, and it’s nice to uphold that.”
Wightman, meanwhile, continued to ride the wave of the greatest 33 days of his career by completing a hat-trick of major medals in 2022 – and then promised to celebrate by surfing down the Eisbach river late on Sunday night.
“I’m going to try to get down that river tonight and hopefully be sober enough to enjoy it and not risk anything,” said Wightman, who made global headlines after winning the 1500m world championship in Eugene while his father, Geoff, commentated on his victory in the stadium.

Told that the surf area went past a nudist area in Munich’s Englischer Garten, Jake joked: “My dad will probably be there. That’s more his scene. If you did that in Bushy Park you’d be in the back of a police car straight away but the rules are a bit different here.”
It was so nearly gold too, with Wightman missing out by just 0.06sec. He spent the first lap tracking the Spaniard Mariano García, but when his main rival began to wind it up with 150m to go, Wightman was temporarily boxed in and was forced to come wide to get a clear run.
That made the difference as Garcia held on to win in a personal best of 1:44.85, with Ireland’s Mark England taking bronze. “I’m disappointed but if you’d said to me before that I’d come away with a silver, I’d have taken that,” he said. “I was a little bit too far back in the straight to make up that gap.”
However Wightman was delighted at his hat-trick of medals, saying: “The thing I’m proudest about is I’ve kept my head through it all because it could easily have been a shit show after the worlds. Mentally it was hard to come back.”
But on a night where the high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh took gold for Ukraine, there was also disappointment for Cindy Sember in the 100 hurdles. The Briton was the favourite for gold but she smashed into the second hurdle and finished last in a race won by Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska in 13.53sec.

After defeating Anthony Joshua for the second time, Oleksandr Usyk has thrown down the challenge to Britain’s Tyson Fury to come out of retirement and fight him for the undisputed world heavyweight boxing title.
The Ukrainian made clear he was only interested in fighting Fury after outpointing Joshua again to retain the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO belts in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Fury, the WBC champion, announced in April he had promised his wife he would retire but had also declared a long-standing interest in fighting Joshua. His promoter, Frank Warren, said this month that Fury was showing signs of “itchy feet” and was keen to get back into the ring.
“I’m sure that Tyson Fury is not retired yet,” Usyk told the crowd through a ringside interpreter when asked about a potential clash. “I am convinced he wants to fight me. I want to fight him. And if I’m not fighting Tyson Fury, I’m not fighting at all.”
After Usyk’s victory, Fury posted an expletive-laden reaction video on Twitter. “It was one of the worst heavyweight title fights I have ever seen,” he said. “I would annihilate both of them on the same night.”
In the later press conference, Usyk dedicated his victory to the people of Ukraine. “It was extremely important for my country, my team and personally for me, I did box for the whole country.”
The champion travelled home at the start of Russia’s invasion and spent a month fighting with Ukraine’s territorial defence battalion.
“I saw in the eighth round, I saw in AJ’s eyes that he was feeling victorious already. I kept telling myself, ‘you cannot stop’ … big things were at stake,” Usyk said. “Thank God, the belts are coming back to Ukraine. The victory is with us.”
Joshua was emotional during his post-fight media duties, and expressed regret that a long-awaited all-British title bout with Fury is no longer on the cards.
“I wanted to win for Great Britain because I know they want me to fight Tyson Fury,” Joshua said. “I’m a fighter, I’m not a normal person, even though I try to hold it together. To be a fighter is a real different mindset.
“But I appreciate everyone’s support, especially those who watched at home, I wanted to do it for them — bring the belts home and set up a fight for the undisputed crown.”
Joshua also signalled his intention to fight again in December, saying “I’m a fighter for life. the hunger never dies”.” When asked about potential opponents, he replied: “It’s come one, come all. Whoever wants it can get it, I don’t mind.”
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has promised a busier schedule for his fighter, whose future bouts will be screened by Dazn as part of an £86m deal that was paused to enable Sky Sports to screen the Usyk rematch on UK pay-per-view.
“We want to see AJ active. There have been too many gaps between fights,” Hearn said. Turning to Joshua, he said: “You’ve had to step up to carry the sport in our country. You never had the easy fights because you wanted to complete a résumé. You wanted to fight the elite.
“I would like to see him get back to enjoying himself, get back to the pressures of working his way back up to the championship belt.” The British fighters Dillian Whyte and Joe Joyce, plus the former WBC world champion Deontay Wilder, are potentially lucrative options. Dolphins swim star Mollie O’Callaghan back among her school mates
Five-time gold medal winning swimming star Mollie O’Callaghan returned to her school yesterday to a hero’s welcome after a near flawless performance at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
O’Callaghan, 18, and fellow Dolphins team member and school mate, Ella Ramsay, 18, were greeted by a ticker-tape parade and wild cheering upon their return to St Peters Lutheran College Springfield.
Also attending the QGSSSA power school’s welcome home parade was high jumper Toby Stolzberg, 16, who finished eighth at the world junior championships.
O’Callaghan, from Dean Boxall’s St Peters Western Swim Club stable, had an extraordinary seven Commonwealth Games and six World Swimming Championship medals draped around her neck.

Indeed O’Callaghan was adorned with so many medals, she counted them like money as she pulled them from her bag, careful not to forget any for her victory lap among her mates.
“The support over the last few years from the school has been incredible,’’ O’Callaghan said.
“They have supported us very well and worked around our swimming careers and it is nice to be finally back wearing the green and gold and having achieved to much in a short period of time.’’
All of O’Callaghan’s 13 medals sparkled in the winter morning sunshine, but two glistened slightly more than the others - her treasured 100m freestyle individual medals from both the world titles and the Commonwealth Games.

Twelve months ago O’Callaghan walked the same victory parade at her school with three Olympic Games medals - but they were all relay medals.
This time she had her own 100m freestyle medals to enjoy.
“This time last year I never thought I would win any individual medals for the worlds or the Commonwealth Games,’’ O’Callaghan said.
“But it is nice to finally think I earned these medals, to finally think I am a part of the team and that I earned my spot.’’
O’Callgahan was a member of the world record breaking 4x200m freestyle relay team.

Both O’Callaghan and Ramsay thanked the school community for its support, which included being chauffeured up to 75km a day, too and from their Springfield campus to St Peters’ swimming headquarters at the college’s Indooroopilly campus.
“That was a big help, especially the bus in the afternoon. It helped so much, especially for our parents,’’ O’Callaghan said.
Ramsay, who was on her first senior Australian team tour of duty, lapped up the moment.
“It is really nice to be back with friends and family and my school teachers who have obviously helped me heaps while I have been away,’’ Ramsay said.
“They helped me get my school work mostly done before I went away and not have the pressure of grade 12 while I was over there,’’ Ramsay said.
Ramsay said to achieve her goal of representing Australia while still at school and sharing that with her friends was amazing.
Ramsay, whose father Heath was a 2020 Sydney Olympian, said she did not have a lot of pressure on her in her 200 Individual Medley events and it was a great learning experience.

“I watched the older, more professional athletes. I watched what they did and learned from them,’’ Ramsay said.
St Peters Lutheran College Springfield campus also recognised a third international athlete, high jumper Toby Stolzberg, 16, who finished eighth at the world junior championships.
“It is overwhelming all the support I have received, and it is great having such a supportive school to celebrate your achievements,’’ she said.
“I remember a couple of years ago watching Mollie (O’Callaghan) walk through the guard of honour and my teachers were saying “that’s going to be you one day’’. It is very exciting to be back.’’
She said it was a wonderful experience and made her hungry to go even better at the next world juniors when she will be aged 18.

O’Callaghan, 18, and fellow Dolphins team member and school mate, Ella Ramsay, 18, were greeted by a ticker-tape parade and wild cheering upon their return to St Peters Lutheran College Springfield.

O’Callaghan, from Dean Boxall’s St Peters Western Swim Club stable, had an extraordinary seven Commonwealth Games and six World Swimming Championship medals draped around her neck.

Indeed O’Callaghan was adorned with so many medals, she counted them like money as she pulled them from her bag, careful not to forget any for her victory lap among her mates.
“The support over the last few years from the school has been incredible,’’ O’Callaghan said.
“They have supported us very well and worked around our swimming careers and it is nice to be finally back wearing the green and gold and having achieved to much in a short period of time.’’
All of O’Callaghan’s 13 medals sparkled in the winter morning sunshine, but two glistened slightly more than the others - her treasured 100m freestyle individual medals from both the world titles and the Commonwealth Games.

Twelve months ago O’Callaghan walked the same victory parade at her school with three Olympic Games medals - but they were all relay medals.
This time she had her own 100m freestyle medals to enjoy.
“This time last year I never thought I would win any individual medals for the worlds or the Commonwealth Games,’’ O’Callaghan said.
“But it is nice to finally think I earned these medals, to finally think I am a part of the team and that I earned my spot.’’
O’Callgahan was a member of the world record breaking 4x200m freestyle relay team.

Both O’Callaghan and Ramsay thanked the school community for its support, which included being chauffeured up to 75km a day, too and from their Springfield campus to St Peters’ swimming headquarters at the college’s Indooroopilly campus.
“That was a big help, especially the bus in the afternoon. It helped so much, especially for our parents,’’ O’Callaghan said.

Ramsay, who was on her first senior Australian team tour of duty, lapped up the moment.
“It is really nice to be back with friends and family and my school teachers who have obviously helped me heaps while I have been away,’’ Ramsay said.
“They helped me get my school work mostly done before I went away and not have the pressure of grade 12 while I was over there,’’ Ramsay said.
Ramsay said to achieve her goal of representing Australia while still at school and sharing that with her friends was amazing.
